1. Eligibility: The competition is open to high school students (Grades 9-12) in public, private, charter,
and alternative schools. Home-schooled students in that age group also may enter. Students must be
attending school in the following Western Governors’ Association (WGA) member states or territories:

2. Guidelines: Artwork must be two-dimensional and may be created by painting (oil, watercolor,
acrylic, etc.), drawing (pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, ink, markers, pastels, etc.), lithography, silkscreen,
mixed media, computer graphics, and collage. No photography or video-based submissions will be
accepted. The unframed artwork submitted shall not be smaller than 8” x 10” and shall not be larger than
24” x 36” unless prior approval is given to the student by WGF.

3. Subject Matter and Suitability: Students shall submit entries conveying what their state means to
them, how they are artistically inspired by their state, or the uniqueness of living in the West. All entries
must be the student's original work and not violate any U.S. copyright laws. “Original” is defined as
artwork that is unique in concept, design, and execution, and is created directly and personally by
the student. “Original” work is not a copy or imitation of another person’s work. The preceding
requirement also excludes AI-generated artwork, as such works will not be regarded as original. All
non-original work will be immediately disqualified, and the student will be excluded from all future
competitions or programs hosted by the Western Governors’ Foundation or Association. Entries that
unnecessarily depict violence or political controversy, are profane or pornographic, or promote illegal
activities will also be disqualified.

The Foundation for Community Care will award, on an annual basis, a scholarship to a student or students from Richland County or the surrounding areas (Sidney Health Center service area) that are pursuing a degree or certification in a healthcare curriculum. Montana CattleWomen, Inc. is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a student from a Montana home who is enrolled in one of the state colleges or universities. Preference will be given to an applicant majoring in a field beneficial to the livestock industry.

The Montana Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. awards an annual $2,000 scholarship to a student who is a Montana resident and citizen of the United States of America majoring in Conservation, Horticulture, Parks or Forestry, Floriculture, Greenhouse Management, Land Management or related subjects. Over the past twenty-one years, the Big Sky State Games has awarded the Character Counts! Scholarship to outstanding Montana female and male student-citizen-athletes involved in the Big Sky State Games. The scholarship can be used for any secondary education after high school. ExtremeTerrain is offering two $2,500 scholarships, one for the fall semester and one for the spring Semester to eligible students pursuing a degree in Environmental Studies, Environmental Research, Land Use, Earth and Atmosphere Studies, Sustainable Land Management, Parks and Recreation, or Sustainable Agriculture Systems.

Benefis Health System Foundation Scholarships vary in criteria, but all applicants must have a GPA of 2.75, or higher and full-time students must be taking 9 or more credits. This scholarship, called the Marj Keaton/Margie Mullen Scholarship, is typically offered for $1200. This amount can fluctuate based on additional income our organization raises or individual donations.  The two women that this scholarship honors were venerable contributors to Bozeman education, each serving the community on the Bozeman Board of Education during their lifetime. Margie Mullen also served as a Mortar Board advisor at MSU.  

Specific criteria for this scholarship are:

1. Must be a registered MSU Bozeman student with a 2.5  GPA 

2. Must be a sophomore or junior

3. Must demonstrate financial need, and display attributes of citizenship and character (e.g., volunteerism, campus involvement)
